Paxos - the jewel of the Greek Ionian Isles. Here in Poseidon and Aphrodite's love nest who could fail to be moved by the loveliness of this tender green brushstroke on a sparkling azure canvas? Paxos - picturesque, peaceful, pleasure-loving, paintable, pastoral, pebbly, profuse, passionate, poetic, perfect, a paradise.

Paxos is for lovers and overstressed business people, for the romantic and the adventurous, for sun - worshippers and sailors, for children and the young at heart, for poets and pragmatists, artists and anglers, families and the solitary, in fact for anyone who needs to pause and consider, to relax and enjoy.

Whether your idea of heaven is wandering along winding paths through cool aromatic olive groves, swimming lazily in silky waters, ferreting for bargains and objets d' art in narrow shady streets, sipping something ice-cold in a quay-side cafe, exploring gastronomic pleasures in friendly, family tavernas, romantic rendezvous on velvet starlit nights, or just sitting absorbing beauty and silence, Paxos is that heaven.

But a warning to the unsuspecting - such is the magic of the island and its people that commitment could very well be for life! To stay there you can choose from discreet hotels, luxury villas, modern apartments, family houses and stone-built cottages.

On the subject of stone - built cottages, a newly renovated one, which sleeps 4-5, is available for rent all year round. It consists of a large dining/kitchen featuring a traditional cooking fireplace with a washing machine and a freezer, a stone-flagged living room opening onto a pretty vine-shaded patio/garden, a bathroom, a bedroom with a double bed and a walk-in cupboard, and an attractive twin-bedded loft (air-conditioned).

In a picturesque hamlet just off the main road close to the renowned traditional taverna 'Karkaletzos', it is a perfect place for a family or friends who want to get a taste of the 'real' Paxos and enjoy exploring. Breath taking cliff-top views are within easy reach, as is Gaios, the 'capital' of the island, a delightful cosmopolitan village built around a lovely natural harbour.

Also low cost rooms are now available for renting, right at the centre of Gaios, with a wonderful view of the Harbour and the little island of St. Nikolas. Select "Images" in the menu above to see photos of the properties available.
